I'd like to thank the Reader for touting the talk I gave in Oak Park on Tuesday, July 23, about my book Why Architecture Matters: Lessons From Chicago (Calendar, July 19). But one fact came out sideways: Rumors about the architecture critic's job being on the block surfaced before I was named to the post in 1992, not after, as you state. When commercial real estate collapsed in the early 1990s, the speculation was that the Tribune might no longer need an architecture critic. Thankfully, the editors took a longer--and wiser--view.
