Blind Mountain

China's long-standing one-child policy has resulted in the murder and abandonment of many female infants, creating a dearth of marriage-minded single women and a rise in human trafficking. This dreary 2007 melodrama, the second feature by Chinese writer-director Li Yang (Blind Shaft), details the tribulations of a lovely urban university graduate (Huang Lu) who is kidnapped, drugged, and sold as a bride to a coarse villager in the rural mountains. The movie not only indicts the country's embrace of capitalism by showing how low people will sink to make money, it also denigrates the agrarian class—once celebrated as heroic under Mao—by portraying its members as illiterate barbarians concerned only with continuing their family lines. In Mandarin and Shaanxi with subtitles. 99 min.
