Blitzkid, Gravedirt, Horror Is Dead, Turbo Vamps Recommended Soundboard

When: Wed., Jan. 21, 8 p.m. 2009

My affection for these horror-punk diehards comes partly from early Misfits damage and partly from the fact that they hail from Bluefield, which straddles the border between Virginia and West Virginia, just a few miles from where I grew up—it’s notable largely for being one of the most southerly places to see lake-effect snow. Doubtless the biggest band ever to come from that tiny town, Blitzkid have inspired an especially passionate fan base in Europe, though they have fans (or potential fans) anywhere people appreciate tunefulness, hooks, and the art of rock-zombie makeup. Their sing-along choruses are catchy enough for oi, and when they show a romantic side—as on “Mary and the Storm”—they sound like they’ve been robbing the grave the Damned are supposed to be in. They’re touring in support of the best-of collection Anatomy of Reanimation: Volume 1 (Fiend Force); Gravedirt, Horror Is Dead, and the Turbo Vamps open. —Monica Kendrick
