Blockade | Chicago Reader

This 1938 film was Hollywood's first attempt to film the Spanish civil war. William Dieterle's direction is simpleminded and romantic but moving nonetheless. The script (by John Howard Lawson, later one of the “Hollywood Ten”) was supposedly edited by the film's producer, Walter Wanger, so you can't tell the fascists from the republicans. Henry Fonda and Madeleine Carroll star.
