There are two main types of Devo fan: dilettantes who put "Whip It" on their "Totally Awesome 80s" mix CDs and insanely dedicated devotees who listen to the group's beyond-weird prefame demos (available on two collections entitled Hardcore Devo), hunt down vintage power-dome helmets on eBay, and consider "Gates of Steel" one of the best rock 'n' roll songs ever. I'm of the latter sort, and I've recently been extra obsessed with Devo's bizarre and unlikely early-80s collaborations with Neil Young at his most coked out—including a totally unreal Devo-fied version of Young's "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" sung by Mark Mothersbaugh sitting in a crib in his Booji Boy getup. The band just released a new song, "Don't Roof Rack Me, Bro! (Seamus Unleashed)," about Mitt Romney's unfortunate pet dog, and honestly, it sounds like a weekend-warrior dad band trying vaguely to channel Devo—but we can probably pretend that it doesn't exist. —Miles Raymer Blondie headlines.
