I expect most people will either love or hate Ben Fuchsen's spartan, highly stylized staging of Federico Garcia Lorca's 1932 tragedy. Set in a barren, tradition-bound Spanish countryside, the play follows doomed lovers and their doomed families, cursed by the moon, blood, and several other ominous, multivalent metaphors. With a few dimly lit scrims, designer James Ogden turns a tiny space into an infinite void from which iconic characters--the bitter widow, the jilted wife, the idealistic son--emerge for no other purpose than to deliver Lorca's gorgeous, brutal poetry. Fuchsen's cast burn Lorca's grotesque imagery into the emptiness. I loved it. --Justin Hayford
