Blowout The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 24 2013

There's no reason that Aguijon Theater's latest production, which follows the lives of the employees of a West Town beauty salon over the course of several days, should work as well as it does. It takes on an absurd number of weighty themes for a comedy: Alzheimer's, domestic violence, and gentrification, with a little homosexuality thrown in for good measure. Some of the dialogue is eye-rollingly cheesy, and there's no real plot—or to be more precise, there are so many plots that none of them really gets resolved. But the misfits who work at Gloria's Jair an Maykop (pronounce the name with a Spanish accent if the spelling seems off) are as funny and lovable a cast of characters as I've seen in a while, and their obvious affection for each other carries the play. Performed in Spanish with English supertitles. —Julia Thiel
