Blue Crush

Director John Stockwell returns to the adolescent terrain of Crazy/Beautiful for this buoyant tale about a quartet of working-class surfer girls on the northern shore of Oahu. The plot is as skimpy as their bikinis: Kate Bosworth looks after her 14-year-old delinquent sister (Mika Boorem) while working as a maid at a luxury hotel with two pals (Michelle Rodriguez and Sanoe Lake); she's training for a big competition that promises magazine covers and endorsement deals, but her regimen is upset when a hunky NFL quarterback (Matthew Davis) staying at the hotel hires the women to give him and his teammates surfing lessons. Inspired by an article in Outside magazine, the script gives Bosworth some nightmare flashbacks of a traumatic wipeout three years earlier and suggests the wave-tossed young women are just as courageous physically as the pro footballers whose thousand-dollar hotel rooms they clean. 104 min.
