Upscale sports bar from the owner of the Candlelite.
This high-style sports bar has large-screen TVs in every corner, lofted wood ceilings, slate blue curtains, soft cobalt lights, and faux-weathered wood booths lining a mirrored wall. Close to a third of the space is taken up by the bar, where crowds of Northwestern fans stop in before and after games. Offerings are more ambitious than at a typical bar; a special appetizer one night was a spinach-stuffed portobello with goat cheese in a smoky roasted red pepper sauce. (There are also the standard wings, onion rings, and fried calamari.) An entree special was a blackened mahi-mahi dusted with mild spices and served with rice pilaf and pico de gallo. In addition to higher-end entrees like a New York strip, roasted salmon, and linguine with andouille and shrimp (or chicken), there's homemade pizza, burgers, and a roasted-veggie sandwich. The reasonably priced wine list and extensive beer selection are impressive, and the waitstaff is casual, friendly, and speedy.

Talk about your neighborhood hangouts. One night we ran into an acquaintance sitting at a side table with her teenage son—and both were reading. Kids climbed on their parents, who'd come over from the restaurant side of this north Evanston venue to talk with friends sitting at the bar. You get the feeling an especially easygoing PTA could meet here. Craft beers are a big item. The walls feature flags from different golf courses, but that's the extent of the sports vibe. —Tony Adler
