Bob Greene Is My Favorite Columnist

Dear Reader,

Bob Greene is my favorite columnist [Reading, September 26]. This is so not because of his ability--although I see him as a talented writer--but because he does not see our ever-growing tendencies toward immodesty, selfishness, and meanness as things to be celebrated, but rather mourned and repented of. I don't think he is exalting himself by saying that the nice stories don't get much airtime. He's pointing to yet another ill in our society that can be remedied.

I applaud him for creating the stir which I believe kept an incompetent judge from becoming head of our Supreme Court. However, if he succeeds in spreading a little more kindness and gentleness in our country, he will have far surpassed this significant accomplishment.
