Bobby Rush Recommended Soundboard Critics' Picks

When: Sat., Jan. 31, 7 p.m. 2009

Bobby Rush is best known for his rakish trickster persona and lyrics that bubble with double entendres, but on his current album, Look at What You Gettin’ (Deep Rush), he sounds like he’s getting at least a little more serious: his usual cast of back-door tomcats and sharp-tongued hoochie mamas has been largely replaced by straight-talking protagonists who complain about their lovers doing them wrong or celebrate the joys of being with somebody who’ll treat them right. There are relatively few up-tempo outings here, and Rush’s jaunty pop-funk sound is tempered in places by an aching bluesiness. That’s not to say I expect him to morph into a modern-day Robert Johnson anytime soon—the tale of polyamorous high jinks in “I Got 3 Problems” is classic Rush, and on the title tune he proclaims his bedroom prowess with a potent mix of braggadocio and seductiveness. I’m also pretty sure his stage show will be as bawdy and irreverent as ever. Still, it’s encouraging to hear the self-proclaimed master of “folk funk” dial it down a little, if only to prove he can. —David Whiteis
