Body & Blood The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 9 2015

Like his 2011 Northwest Highway, William Nedved's new play is a modest kitchen-table—or more accurately, backyard-deck—drama about an old-style white ethnic Chicago man arriving at a moment of truth. The earlier script gave us thirtyish John, a cop who's as hesitant as Hamlet over his pregnant girlfriend, corrupt partner, and a possible change of address, among other things. In Body & Blood, we get thirtyish Dan, a nominal Catholic and perpetual fuckup who shakes up his newfound stability when a tree tells him to join the priesthood. Both works have their engaging elements, but neither digs too deep, opting instead to import subthemes that seem more fashionable than relevant or organic. One final "both": also like its predecessor, Body & Blood gets a smart, assured production from the Gift Theatre. —Tony Adler
