West Loop spot with old-school charm but dry Italian beef.
Bombacigno's has an old-school charm that initially promises a reprieve from the standard flavorless choices for lunch in the greater Loop. Over the register hangs a massive chalkboard covered in neat cursive, and theres a long, dusty wooden bar; the only downside is the Fox News blaring over the bar. I ordered a large cup of chili and an Italian beef, hot and dipped. The menu board proclaims the beef the "leanest you could ever taste." That could be part of the problem. As my friend Joe put it, "Meat needs to be cooked in a little fat for flavor. I don't want lean beef. Sure enough, despite a deceptively good bun and juices that splattered all over my white shirt, the beef was dry and overcooked; meanwhile the bottom layer of my cottage fries (which I actually rather liked) was coated with congealed grease. My chili, although generously portioned, was cold in the center and not quite as good as Wendys. It's none too cheap here either.
