Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2

A documentary-style introduction cleverly fuses the hype surrounding The Blair Witch Project (1999) and that mockumentary's plot. But the rest of this interminable sequel is a straight exploitation story whose only twist comes from a deus ex machina that's a late-20th-century cliche—a video of the characters filming themselves. Fresh from a psych ward, an entrepreneur who sells Blair Witch souvenirs on the Web and half believes in the legend takes two academics, a goth, and a Wiccan into the hills of Maryland to find evidence supporting or debunking the earlier movie's mythology. In intercut scenes set a day or two later, a sheriff interrogates some of the group members, who've become murder suspects. They say they don't remember anything that's happened, and neither will you. Director Joe Berlinger (Brother's Keeper) wrote the screenplay with Dick Beebe. 90 min.
