Borderline Lovers

An intimate documentary portrait of three couples in the former Yugoslavia as they battle the forces trying to separate them. Miroslav Mandic unobtrusively observes his subjects as they go about their daily lives, juggling finances, jobs, children, and danger, and he deftly intercuts their stories—the non-Muslim truck driver and his Muslim girlfriend who live in Mostar but must meet clandestinely to avoid their families' anger, a Catholic woman from Croatia and her Eastern Orthodox boyfriend from Montenegro who for three years have been rendezvousing at the border, and a happily married couple with a young daughter whose families were literally at war with each other several years earlier. In Serbo-Croatian with subtitles. 84 min.
