Boris, Clouds, Poison Arrows Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard Recommended

When: Sat., Nov. 29, 10 p.m. 2008

It’s been almost three years since Cave In went on what’s starting to look like a permanent hiatus, but guitarist Adam McGrath hasn’t been idle. His new band, Clouds, which also includes veterans of Kid Kilowatt and the Hope Conspiracy, made ripples with last year’s Legendary Demo and then an out-and-out cannonball splash with We Are Above You (Hydra Head), which is bigger, sloppier, and more impressive. Less arch and artsy than Cave In, Clouds have hitched themselves to the plodding, throbbing stoner-rock bandwagon. I’d say they were a decade late and a dollar short if they weren’t so good at it: the barn-burning boogie of “Heisenburg Says” and the shambling Shoggoth shuffle of “Feed the Horse” defuse all the obvious criticisms. Originality isn’t the main appeal of Camaro rock—horsepower is. —Monica Kendrick
