Born in Libra

In the first portion of this Iranian film, a young couple in love are pulled apart by a religious struggle at their university, a chaotic fight whose betrayals and shifting positions offer an engaging view of contemporary Iranian politics. After the man's side wins, the sexes are strictly segregated, and the couple try to reunite by fleeing to the southern region. They're swept away by a flood and deposited in a minefield, a relic of the war with Iraq, and suddenly we have a Hollywood adventure picture. It's a strange hybrid, but director Ahmad Reza Darvish maintains control of the imagery and editing, often using austere formal strategies (linked movements, intense static shots) to heighten emotion. 96 min.
