Boy I Am

Sam Feder and Julie Hollar's superbly nuanced 2006 documentary explores the complexities of female-to-male transsexuality, which has posed a problem for orthodox feminism and seems to conflict with lesbians' celebration of the female. But a 1920 quote from Margaret Sanger reminds us that the key issue is women's control over their bodies, and a variety of transsexuals talk about their presurgical alienation from their physical selves. Some are seen with their partners and are followed through their surgeries, and the experts who comment have a rare ability to make gender theory relevant to peoples' lives. 66 min.
