Boy Small Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 22 2013

Inspired by a real-life case of horrific child abuse, M.T. Cozzola's new play concerns a 12-year-old boy who's regularly beaten, starved, and locked in a dog cage by his sadistic father. The boy's older sister, though sympathetic to his suffering, is too scared to help, and his self-centered stepmother is too busy preparing for her upcoming audition for a pornographic reality show. We're supposed to be outraged but we're not, mostly because the boy—who talks like an adult and is played by one—is so wise and resilient that we never sense his vulnerability. Patrick Kenney's staging for the Fine Print Theatre Company likewise lacks the right atmosphere of claustrophobia and menace, and the cast struggle to find a tone. —Zac Thompson
