Bread, Love and Dreams

Village policeman (Vittorio De Sica) looking for a wife finds Gina Lollobrigida among the eligibles. Everybody points to Italian director Luigi Comencini's bucolic 1953 comedy as the compromising straw that broke the neorealists' back, turning the raw depiction of social reality to conventional, escapist ends; the film proved extremely popular at the box office, though today it seems less a reactionary foil than a concession to commercial inevitability (i.e., neorealism of a different order). With Marisa Merlini and Roberto Risso. In Italian with subtitles. 90 min.
