In this sensitive, witty comedy, a closeted hockey star turned sportscaster (Thomas Cavanaugh) and his lover (Ben Shenkman) become guardians of an 11-year-old orphan (Noah Bernett) whose tastes run to feather boas, makeup, and musicals. As the men try to teach the preteen queen self-protection skills without squelching his self-esteem, they're forced to confront their own stereotypes about gender and sexual orientation as well as the shortcomings of their relationship. Adapted from a novel by Michael Downing, this 2007 Canadian charmer is buoyed by the leads' delightful performances: Bernett is wonderfully expressive as the mop-top kid. Laurie Lynd directed. 90 min.
