Breaks and Bikes The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 9 2012

Drew squandered his 20s on sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. Now 31, he's hoping law school will give him stability and emotional maturity—or at least money. But a bike accident has put him in a coma. Playwright Mallery Avidon surrounds Drew's hospital bed with significant others—his impoverished mother, two exasperated exes, his current sex toy, and a do-nothing roommate—for a 95-minute vigil consisting of awkward silences, frayed nerves, and existential angst. It's a promising setup, but there's little at stake in the fuzzy interrelationships among the sketchy characters. Ultimately the piece devolves into a literal weep fest. Director Kathryn Walsh has a strong cast, but they spend most of their time running in place. —Justin Hayford
