Brian Jonestown Massacre, Magic Castles 18+ Early Warnings (Music) Member Picks Recommended Soundboard

Twenty years and counting for the Brian Jonestown Massacre—who would have thought? For this spring's Aufheben (A Records), the newly clean and sober Anton Newcombe recorded in Berlin with some recurring characters in the BJM saga, including Will Carruthers (formerly of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized—and it shows) and Matt Hollywood. The band is still living in the same alternate musical universe in which the Velvet Underground was as influential as the Beatles or the Stones while it still existed, rather than years down the road—which of course would've shaped rock as a genre completely differently. There's a lazy, comfortable beauty to Aufheben; it doesn't have the crazy overdriven inventiveness of Methodrone or Thank God for Mental Illness, but it's got its own gentle rewards, including the romantic hippie flute jam of "Face Down on the Moon," the icy chanteuse pop of "Viholliseni Maalla" (with Finnish singer Eliza Karmasalo), and the fuzzy pop-psych and unmistakable "Paint It, Black" motif of "Stairway to the Best Party in the Universe." —Monica Kendrick Magic Castles open. 18+
