Bride of Chucky

Distancing itself from Child's Play, Child's Play 2, and Child's Play 3 in name only, this 1998 sequel is a horror comedy with one shocking scene and one very funny one. Chucky—a doll once infused with the spirit of a dead serial killer—is a pile of parts moldering in an evidence locker until the woman the killer left behind (Jennifer Tilly) hears wedding bells and sews him back together. But Chucky isn't ready to settle down and sends her soul into a female doll he can learn to love. Something of a road story—the crafty dolls manipulate a simpering teenage couple (Katherine Heigl and Nick Stabile) into carting them across state lines while they pretend to be inanimate—the movie includes a death that's unexpected (for a body-count film). Ronny Yu directed a screenplay written by Don Mancini; with Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky. R, 89 min.
