Adapted from the Newbery winner by Katherine Paterson, this family feature from the Christian production company Walden Media is something of a disappointment after its excellent Holes and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb star as two small-town pals who conjure up a magical world in a nearby forest; their friendship and their family lives are warmly realized by director Gabor Csupo, but their problems with a school bully are familiar stuff and the CGI effects in the forest seem to belong to a different movie. This takes a heartbreaking turn in the last act, bringing the story's Christian subtext to the fore; it's the sort of movie I admire more in retrospect than I did while watching it. With Robert Patrick and Zooey Deschanel. PG, 95 min.
