Broads on Boards The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Sundays. Continues through Sept. 4 2011

Old-school Broadway stalwarts with hits like Gamtastic! and Li'l Darlin' Debbie to their credit, Edie Basket and Eleanor Wizz followed a familiar showbiz trajectory: wide-eyed ingenues to overnight successes to pill-popping has-beens-in-residence at the Jacqueline Susann Sanitarium. Amanda Blake Davis and Lauren Dowden play them at the next point of the arc. Edie and Eleanor are making their comeback bid in a redemptive, I'm-still-here retrospective modeled on Elaine Stritch at Liberty right down to the white dress shirts and black tights. Singing original songs by Matthew Loren Cohen, Davis and Dowden display a good deal of talent and a winning moxie. But the show wavers between making fun of the "broads" and eliciting our sympathy for them and feels wishy-washy as a result. --Zac Thompson
