Broadsword The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 24 2013

No, Broadsword isn't a Game of Thrones clone or a D&D tribute. The title refers to a heavy-metal band that, we're told, took shape in a New Jersey basement in 1993 but fell apart without going much of anywhere. Now, 20 years later, Broadsword's three surviving members are back in said basement, paying their respects to Richie, the band's weird genius, who's gone missing and is presumed dead. While they rehash old resentments, they're joined by a musicologist who corresponded with their late pal. Seems Richie's genius was a lot weirder—not to say creepier—than any of them suspected. The material might've yielded a fun Halloween goof. But, influenced perhaps by Conor McPherson's dark dramas of the uncanny, playwright Marco Ramirez and director Keira Fromm treat it seriously. Unlike McPherson, however, Ramirez fails to provide the emotional stakes that would make such an approach pay off. —Tony Adler
