Broadway Melody of 1936

Director Roy Del Ruth moved from Warner Brothers to MGM to make this sequel to Broadway Melody, which might explain why it has a little more grit and zip than MGM's other musicals of the period. Jack Benny stars as a gossip columnist trying to get the goods on producer Robert Taylor, but the real highlights are the gratuitous dance numbers “introducing” Eleanor Powell, Buddy Ebsen, and Ebsen's sister, Vilma. With Una Merkel and Frances Langford; the Arthur Freed-Nacio Herb Brown score includes “Sing Before Breakfast,” “You Are My Lucky Star,” and “Broadway Rhythm.” 101 min.
