Broken Fences Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Nov. 9 2013

Spurning the suburbs, a middle-class couple drops $350K on a beautifully renovated house in Garfield Park while their neighbors, an ex-felon mechanic and his beautician girlfriend, find their stability threatened by forces of gentrification. Though Steven Simoncic's script initially fixates on stereotypes—yoga pants, Starbucks—it soon accesses subtler points of racial tension. When the tenuous sense of community that's developed boils over, the chain-link fence at center stage ceases to allude to the picket-fence frontier of the American dream; rather, it comes to symbolize what it can't guard these families from: hostile bricks, tax collection agencies, and the steady inward seep of fear. —Jena Cutie
