Brother Bear

Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker of Disney's Florida animation studio came up with this prehistoric transformation myth about a young man in the Pacific northwest (voiced by Joaquin Phoenix) who loses his brother to a bear attack, kills the beast in vengeance, and finds himself turned into a bear himself by the Great Spirit. The modest but guileless story has the ursine hero befriended by the dead bear's unsuspecting cub and hunted by his last surviving human brother, with Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis reprising their Bob and Doug McKenzie routine as a pair of goofy moose. Blaise and Walker cleverly widen the aspect ratio as the hero's consciousness changes and make some lovely pictures of the northern lights, but the atrocious Phil Collins score (with a vocal by Tina Turner) filled me with evil spirits. G, 85 min.
