Brothers Beckett Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through June 30 2013

Brad and Kevin Beckett are Yale grads—Brad in philosophy, Kevin in playwriting—who live together in cheerful squalor in a one-room apartment with bunk beds and Pepto Bismol-pink walls. Kevin is trying to get his play produced, while Brad has resolved to remain unemployed until he finds a job worthy of his degree. They have a goofy neighbor named Doug and a perky meteorologist pal named Joyce who, despite her germophobia, plays Scrabble with them every Sunday. Truly, Brothers Beckett would be an awesome sitcom. Anthony Conway and Maurice Demus are entirely, endearingly believable as brothers who are happiest when they're bickering over a game of backgammon. So it seems almost cruel to them—and to us—to force some major dramatic crises to stretch the play to 120 minutes; it would have been way more fun to watch them solve a little misunderstanding in 30. —Aimee Levitt
