Brothers of the Dust Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 26 2011

Whatever oil may be lurking beneath the Colton family's Ozark farm can't be darker or stickier than the resentments it breeds in Darren Canady's crisply compelling new drama. Roy Colton is less than happy to see his brothers, Ollie and Wilson, when they return to the farm they've all inherited in common. While the other two left for the Midwest as part of the 1950s African-American exodus from the Jim Crow south, Roy stayed behind to work the land—and his feelings toward it have grown strongly proprietary. James Alfred gives the bitterly self-sufficient Roy a commanding presence. The other members of Daniel Bryant's Congo Square Theatre cast are uneven, but they hit enough of the right notes to carry the tune. —Keith Griffith
