Bruce McClure: Projector Performances

Just as digital video is threatening to render celluloid obsolete, artists such as Bruce McClure have started creating performance pieces that have to be seen on film. McClure is bringing four custom projectors to Chicago for two shows of several works, and the three that I've seen live are wonders. He mixes a clear structure (one basic design remains on the screen throughout) with randomness (flickering splotchy patterns) to create elegant and meditative works that reflect the mix of order and chaos in the universe. In Circle Jerks--visually the most lush--he changes the intensity of the light and places gels over different projectors to produce subtly shifting color combinations. The dark rectangle at the center of Presepe evokes a void and is a little frightening. These two works will be among the four on the program at Chicago Filmmakers (62 min.); four different works will be shown at the University of Chicago (56 min.). Fri 2/4, 8 PM, Univ. of Chicago Film Studies Center, 5811 S. Ellis, 773-702-8596; also Sat 2/5, 8 PM, Chicago Filmmakers.
