Buddy Cop 2 Recommended The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 21 2014

This sly drama, developed at Brooklyn-based theater the Debate Society and mounted here by the Pavement Group, begins as a depiction of holiday celebrations in small-town Indiana, and then, borrowing a page from David Lynch, rips off the mask to reveal a darker America underneath. To achieve this, director Cassy Sanders has assembled a pitch-perfect team of artists and production staff—Megan Truscott's scenic design, for example, brilliantly creates the illusion of space within a tiny black-box theater. But the three who deserve the most praise are the trio at the center of the story: Cyd Blakewell, Gabriel Franken, and Joe Zarrow, playing three small-minded but well-meaning small-town cops, each of whom wants desperately to turn the story of a young girl dying of a mysterious disease at Christmas into a heartwarming made-for-TV movie. —Jack Helbig
