Budrus

Rated NR 78 minutes 2010

Without trivializing the Israeli occupation, this 2009 documentary about the title Palestinian village has the slow-burning suspense of a scripted film. The opening passages present an unhurried portrait of the close-knit community, comprised largely of olive farmers; when the Israeli government threatens to build a national barrier in the middle of the village's primary olive grove, the people turn to nonviolent resistance. Their protests inspire international support but also increasingly violent reprisals from the Israeli military, captured here by a half dozen videographers working in fearless proximity to the events. These moments wouldn't be so affecting, though, if director-editor Julia Bacha hadn't established such a sense of intimacy with her subjects.
