Buffalo Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays. Continues through Jan. 14 2015

Most of the sketches in this hour-long musical improv show end with cast members tentatively warbling a tune made up on the spot. If you're a musical-theater fan, you're liable to be disappointed here by lyrics that don't rhyme and voices that struggle to stay in key. The lack of technical mastery could be forgiven if the songs added anything to the proceedings other than a few minutes of discomfort every now and then. The talking bits, by contrast, produce more laughs than cringes—though at the performance I attended, the main event was upstaged by one of the warm-up acts, a team called Lot Lizards. They contributed a quick, delightfully weird set of improvised sketches mostly having to do with deranged backwoods types. —Zac Thompson
