Burning Man: Beyond Black Rock

Damon Brown's lively 2005 documentary on the annual Burning Man event in the Nevada desert makes it seem more interesting than press accounts do. More than 30,000 people converge, many with art and performance projects, for the sheer fun of it. We follow artists as they build a temple and a painted globe you can climb into, then see them installed alongside even more bizarre things. Founder Larry Harvey, formerly a “failure” at all he tried, sees it as a place where others might find themselves. But it's also a bit corporate, with a staff and a security van to keep out gate crashers. (110 min.) Also showing, Rob Van Alkemade's 16-minute Preacher With an Unknown God (2005).
