Bus Stop Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 22 2011

The fledgling Den Theatre inaugurates its Wicker Park loft space with a revival of William Inge's folksy, rambling 1955 comedy. Set in a small Kansas town, the play--a minor work compared to Inge's Picnic and Come Back, Little Sheba--concerns a group of travelers stranded in a diner during a snowstorm. Rambunctious, sexually naive cowboy Bo is determined to marry Cherie, a no-talent "chanteuse," despite her attempts to flee. Middle-aged, alcoholic college teacher Gerald makes a play for the eatery's teenage waitress. And diner owner Grace frolics in her upstairs apartment with Carl the bus driver. Ryan Martin and Lia Mortensen's somewhat sluggish production benefits from Caleb McAndrew's realistic set, but the actors seldom register the aching loneliness underneath the script's wry humor. --Albert Williams
