Bus Stop The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 11 2011

The iceman cometh to the prairie in William Inge's slice-of-life play about yearning souls laying bare their fears and foibles in a Kansas diner during a snowstorm. Ray Toler's detailed period set is a highlight, but the performances in JoAnn Montemurro's comfortable, somewhat aimless staging don't transcend the archetype-veering-into-stereotype nature of Inge's characters. A welcome exception is Jon Steinhagen as Dr. Lyman, a dipsomaniacal professor who struggles with his desire for bookish teen waitress Elma. As wannabe chanteuse Cherie, Jen Short wisely avoids channeling Marilyn Monroe's breathiness from the film version. Still, there's a mid-century-museum-piece scent about the show that not even the smells emanating from the working grill can overcome. --Kerry Reid
