Cabaret Recommended The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 11 2009

Jim Corti's revival of the Kander & Ebb musical is fresh and energetic, evoking its spirit without imitating any of its previous, iconic incarnations (Hal Prince's 1966 Broadway staging, Bob Fosse's amazing 1972 movie, Sam Mendes's darker, meaner 1998 Broadway revival). Corti's ensemble seem similarly interested in making the characters their own. The warm, wonderful Zarah Mahler plays Sally Bowles, not Liza Minnelli playing Sally Bowles. And Patrick Andrews's Master of Ceremonies in no way reminded me of Joel Grey or Alan Cumming. Some may quibble with Corti's decision to emphasize the glamour of Weimar Berlin over its decadence--in this version, when the MC quips that "even the band is beautiful" he isn't kidding--but this choice makes the growing menace of the Nazis, bubbling just below the surface, all the more palpable. --Jack Helbig
