"The force of the feminine is a power principle that needs to be rescued from history because it has been surpressed," says Silvia Malagrino. Her response: photo montages of natural forms (vegetation, underwater life, lava flows) suggesting "that spiritual realm in which human beings and nature are one." Ahem. Malagrino is currently a visiting artist at the School of the Art Institute and an assistant professor of photography at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "Earth Calls," an exhibit of her photo montages--some of them as big as 8 feet by 12 feet--opens Wednesday at Artemisia Gallery, 700 N. Carpenter. The gallery is open 11 to 5 Tuesday through Saturday, and an opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 next Friday, October 5. The show runs through October 26; call 226-7323 for more info.
