Madison artist Mary Bero used paint and various kinds of embroidery to make the tiny (four-by-six-inch) but intense Palette Race, one of the works featured in the recent book Celebrating the Stitch and in the current exhibit of the same name at the Textile Arts Centre. The book, by Forest Park fiber artist Barbara Smith, looks at pieces by about 100 North American artists who use embroidery in their work, and this exhibit focuses on the book's midwestern artists. Smith says that many of the 29 artists in the show (including herself) were trained in painting, drawing, or printmaking before turning to stitchery, and that it shows in their work. "Embroidery is more painterly than many other craft forms," she says. "Every stitch is carefully considered." "Celebrating the Stitch: Midwest Artists" runs through January 11 at the Textile Arts Centre, 916 W. Diversey. Hours are 10 to 5 Tuesday through Saturday; there is no admission charge. Call 929-5655. (Mary Bero is also represented by Objects Gallery, 230 W. Huron; 664-6622.)
