Between 1908 and 1932, Procter & Gamble heir Sidney Gamble made four journeys to China during which he took approximately 4,000 photographs. He later published several magazine articles and books on Chinese life before he died in 1968. Five years ago his daughter Catherine Curran and the Sidney D. Gamble Foundation for China Studies organized an exhibition of photographs he took in China between the fall of the Man Chu dynasty and the rise of Chiang Kai-shek. This picture of an aristocratic dowager with bound feet taken in 1918 in the Forbidden City is one of the 81 works in "China Between Revolutions: Photographs by Sidney Gamble 1917-1927," which is on view through May 9 at the Field Museum, Roosevelt Road at Lake Shore Drive. Museum hours are 9 to 5 daily; admission is $4 for adults, $2.50 for seniors, students, and children. Call 922-9410 for information.
