California X, Earth Girls, All Eyes West, Empty Isle, Peoples Temple of America 17+ Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Thu., Jan. 22, 8:30 p.m. 2015

If three guys play languid guitar rock in western Massachusetts and there’s no one around to compare them to Dinosaur Jr., do they still make a sound? California X clearly have a healthy love for J Mascis, but they don’t quite share his slacker cool—on the band’s new album, Nights in the Dark (Don Giovanni), front man Lemmy Gurtowsky yelps his lyrics like he’s got everything in the world to lose. His vocal tone owes more to late-90s pop punk than to Mascis’s Neil Young drawl as he bares his worries about love, growing up, and social awkwardness. Between the fist-pumping hooks of “Nights in the Dark” and the heavy sludge of “Blackrazor (Pt. 1),” California X don’t let the record stay in one place for too long—and like their peers in Diarrhea Planet, they’re not shy about cranking the guitar solos. —Sasha Geffen
