Call Me by Your Name

A modern-day Visconti, Italian director Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love) grants us entry into a world not only of wealth but of culture, which can be just as liberating. This richly textured gay romance, adapted by James Ivory (of Merchant-Ivory fame) from a novel by André Aciman, unfolds over the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, where a prominent historian (Michael Stuhlbarg) welcomes his tall, lanky research assistant (Armie Hammer) for an extended visit at his 17th-century villa. Sparks fly between the vibrant young man and the scholar's razor-sharp teenage son (Timothée Chalamet) while the two of them pretend to chase girls, the ups and downs of their secret love unfolding against an effortlessly authentic milieu in which the proper piano interpretation of a Bach cantata ranks in importance alongside the joy of dancing to the Psychedelic Furs. In English and subtitled French, Italian, and German.
