Can't Hardly Wait

Though set in the 90s, this enjoyable story about an all-night graduation party is full of 70s music—probably an indication of the ages of writer-directors Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, whose quaint approach emphasizes timeless conflicts over era-defining tics. Lauren Ambrose is curious and confrontational as an ambivalent loner who challenges poseur Seth Green to remember his roots. Meanwhile Ethan Embry moons over disgruntled homecoming queen Jennifer Love Hewitt. A geek-versus-jock prank has the expected unexpected results, and when first-time drunk Charlie Korsmo rocks out on a tiny stage vacated by the bickering hired band, instantly becoming make-out worthy, it's not supposed to be a revelation—just a pleasant rendition of a teen-comedy trope (1998).
