No matter how seamlessly the technology may be integrated (and it's pretty seamless here), the idea of a 3-D comic book adaptation still feels all wrong: the pleasure of reading comics has less to do with perceived depth than with lateral movement. Still, this superhero adventure has a fair amount going for it. Joe Johnston—returning to the vibe of his first directorial effort, The Rocketeer (1991)—creates a fun retro-futurist environment with a World War II setting, and he has the discernment not to let the effects overwhelm the story (at least until he reaches the arbitrary half-hour of explosions that concludes every blockbuster these days). There's also a pleasant nostalgia for how people walked and talked in movies 70 years ago. With Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, and Stanley Tucci.
