When: Thursdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Continues through July 12 2014

Back in the day, this musical horror show based on the Stephen King novel was the benchmark for expensive Broadway bombs—the original 1988 production cost $8 million and ran for only 16 previews and five performances. But after that dismal start the show's creators (Michael Gore, Dean Pitchfold, and Lawrence D. Cohen) revised the work for a 2012 off-Broadway run. Whatever they did, it worked, to judge from Bailiwick Chicago's wonderful revival. Excepting Stephen H. Carmody's inelegant set, the show is impressive—performances are strong across the board, and the production never flags. Michael Driscoll's casting and direction are spot-on, Brigitte Ditmars's evocative choreography gives us Broadway scale without feeling cramped in the smallish performing space, and Callie Johnson is riveting as the poor, bullied high school girl with deadly telekinetic powers. —Jack Helbig
