Carrie | Chicago Reader

Carrie

Theodore Dreiser's great Chicago novel, Sister Carrie, filmed handsomely and lifelessly by William Wyler. Laurence Olivier, as the restaurant manager who throws his life away for a small-town girl, unbalances the film with his busy charisma; as Carrie, Jennifer Jones has a haze of neuroticism that obscures Dreiser's definitive portrait of corrupting innocence. With Miriam Hopkins and Eddie Albert, who is excellent as Carrie's ineffectual husband (1952).
