Cars | Chicago Reader

The press notes for this Pixar animation describe it as a “very personal story” for director and car enthusiast John Lasseter, though its surefire appeal to NASCAR families and its epic merchandising potential couldn't have hurt. Owen Wilson supplies the voice of an arrogant race car that gets stranded in a desert town on its way to a west-coast championship and learns to enjoy life in the slow lane. The movie generates a few laughs through its typecasting—Paul Newman is a grouchy old Hudson Hornet, George Carlin a hippie-dippy VW bus, Cheech Marin a customized Impala lowrider, Larry the Cable Guy a rusty tow truck—but at 116 minutes, it's a test not of speed but endurance.
